The middle school math club earned top honors at the MATHCOUNTS Regional Competition at Burns and McDonnell on Saturday, Feb. 7. Several students received individual awards, and a few qualified for the state competition in March.
The group won first place in the team competition. Individually, Michael John, grade 8, earned first place overall. Nezar Alchekakie, grade 6, placed third and George Ellsworth, grade 7, placed fourth. Yara Alchekakie, grade 7 and Yuto Mori, grade 8 were both recognized as top-10 finishers.
To advance to the state-level competition, students must make the list of top 10% of competitors. While other regions are still holding competitions to determine that list, Michael, George, Yara and Nezar have already qualified based on their first place team win.
MATHCOUNTS is a national nonprofit organization that provides engaging math programs for students in grades 6-8. More than 100,000 students participate in MATHCOUNTS programs each year.
The MATHCOUNTS state competition is scheduled for Saturday, March 7 in Columbia, Missouri on the Mizzou campus.
