Lower and Middle School Writers Pen Winning Essays

Three students were selected as grade level winners in the 2025 American History Essay Contest, an annual competition organized by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).
This contest, which was established to encourage young people to think creatively about history, is open to students in grades 5-8 in public and private schools. Students submit their essays to local DAR chapters, where judges evaluate them for historical accuracy and adherence to the topic, along with spelling, grammar and neatness. Each year, students write on a specific topic; this year’s contest focused on the era of the American Revolution (1773-1783) and the people who were involved. Each chapter selects one essay from each grade to advance to the state level.

The Mission Hills DAR chapter selected three Barstow students as grade level winners, whose essays will advance for evaluation at the state level. Like the chapter level, one essay per grade is chosen at the state level, with winners advancing to the national round. Barstow lower and middle school students have consistently earned recognition in regional and national contests for more than a decade.
