Architecture Students Turn Theory into Craftsmanship

Upper school architecture students didn’t simply make a digital model of a storage shed this month. They're actually building the real thing for Barstow campus use.
From site visits to blueprint planning and computer modeling, students have moved on to power tools and hands-on production in the IDEA Space Fabrication Workshop.

Working with Design & Fabrication Coordinator Aaron Dalton, students started the project using Revit. The Building Information Modeling (BIM) software is used by architects, engineers and construction professionals to design and build intelligent 3D models with geometry and data.

This project integrates many key components of Barstow's STEAM program: technology, engineering, math, design thinking, problem solving and collaboration. Student-architects have also had an opportunity to work with a client. With input from Lead Maintenance Technician Elias Jones, they've made adjustments to the original 10-by-12 foot modular design to ensure the finished shed fits the facilities department's needs.

Building the shed is turning theory into skill, confidence and craftsmanship. "When I've stopped by the workshop, I've seen some of the students look so enthralled in their work," Jones said. ""I see them taking pride in what they're building. I think it's great that Barstow can be self-sufficient for something like this."

The shed will be installed on campus and used to store seasonal maintenance and special event equipment. This hands-on build gives students a real-world lab to explore:

  • Footing + structural calculations
  • Heat loss + gain and energy considerations
  • Wood-frame construction + tool safety
  • Problem-solving through every step
"This has been a huge dream of mine," IDEA Space Director Cassie Banka '05 said. "I just never had the space of skills to make it happen. Watching students translate digital plans into real structures — piece by piece — is what authentic learning looks like."
