Novice Debate Duo Takes Championship

Upper school debate opened its season with impressive results in two states, including a novice policy debate championship and a strong showing against national competition.
Freshmen Zahra Khumri and Nisah Hathiari took first place in novice Policy Debate at the Jacci Langston Wildcat Classic hosted by Blue Springs High School, Oct. 10-11. The duo beat Pembroke Hill’s top three teams on the way to the championship. Zahra also advanced to the finals in Student Congress.

Charlotte Turner, junior, and Sky MacIvor, senior, advanced to the octafinal elimination round in varsity Policy Debate at the Trevian Invitational hosted by New Trier High School near Chicago, Oct. 11-13. The field featured 69 teams from 23 schools across nine states. Sky and Charlotte earned a 4-2 preliminary record to reach the elimination rounds for the top 32 teams.

Barstow varsity students also competed in Policy Debate, Extemporaneous Speaking, and Student Congress at the Jaguar Classic hosted by Blue Springs South High, Oct. 10-11.
