Barstow Students Make Their Mark
Barstow students continued to learn, create, compete and make an impact well beyond campus this summer. From international athletic competition to the world’s largest arts festival, entrepreneurial ventures and modeling, our students used their talents in remarkable ways.
Taking the Stage in Edinburgh
Barstow Theatre students took their talents across the Atlantic, traveling from Kansas City to Scotland to perform at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the largest arts festival in the world.
The Barstow ensemble presented "R&J: The Lost Children of Verona," written by theatre director Jason Chanos as a reimagining of Shakespeare’s "Romeo and Juliet." Performing for audiences from around the globe, the students experienced the excitement and challenge of sharing their work on an international stage while representing Barstow in one of the world’s premier performing arts settings.
The cast and crew included David Knights, Gia Khan, Stella Rosenthal, Anson German, Ava Shepherd, Max Chanos, Jonah Cook, Matt Doss, Duece Chanos, Jahnavi Kakarala, Skye Mueller, CJ Wilson, Edward Judge, Roland Kaufman, Cole Mueller, Elliott Clement and Cooper Chanos.
Their journey to Edinburgh reflects Barstow's commitment to experiential learning and global education. The trip, which included a first stop in London for sightseeing and theatregoing, is the School's fourth stop at Fringe.
Representing the United States on the International Stage
Dhruv Doshi, grade 5, took his love of soccer to an international level this summer when he traveled to Brazil to represent the U.S. on the United States Youth Futsal International Team.
Dhruv joined a team of nine-to 10-year-old boys from across the country who trained together in Brazil before competing against teams from throughout South America. The competition included matches against teams representing Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, giving Dhruv the opportunity to test his skills against talented young athletes from around the world while experiencing the sport in one of soccer’s most passionate countries.
Young Entrepreneurs Turn Slime Into a Business
Closer to home, fifth grader Marylin Lackey and third grader Scarlet Lackey put their entrepreneurial skills to work by launching their own business: Two Tales Slime Shop.
The sisters brought their handmade creations to First Fridays in the Crossroads, where they sold more than a dozen varieties of slime, along with DIY kits that allowed customers to experiment with their own slime recipes at home. They'll set up shop on 19th Street once again on Sept. 4.
From developing products and creating a brand to interacting with customers and making sales, Marylin and Scarlet turned a creative interest into a real-world business venture.

Thousands of Kansas City-area readers getting ready for the back-to-school season were greeted by third grader Henry Wiles! Henry appears on the cover of KC Parent magazine's August issue, which has a a total print and digital reach of about 230,000 people every month! The cover shoot was offered as an auction item during the 2025 Green & White Gala.
