The Barstow Cyber Patriots placed third overall at the Missouri state cybersecurity competition on Friday, Dec. 12, competing in the Platinum division against schools from across the state.
Competitors included seniors Sam Golladay, Eshan Patel and Carlos Salazar, along with sophomores Maaz Hawa and AliAkbar Khumri, and junior Yuzhao Xi.
The team earned its place in the Platinum division, the highest tier of competition, through strong results in the first two rounds.
In this competition, students worked to identify and isolate security vulnerabilities across three operating systems: Linux Mint 21, Microsoft Server 2022 and Ubuntu 24. Each round of the competition increases in difficulty, challenging teams to utilize increasingly advanced cybersecurity skills.
The team also scored higher than any previous Barstow team on the Cisco Network Packet Tracer portion, tying the first-place team in the state in the networking category. The Packet Tracer program provides students with a hands-on, risk-free environment to learn foundational networking and cybersecurity skills while configuring and securing virtual networks.
