Middle & Upper School Classes Compete for Points With Diaper Drive

Middle and upper school launched an initiative to earn points and serve the community this fall with a competitive diaper drive, benefiting Kansas City nonprofit organization Happy Bottoms.
Upper school classes and middle school advisory teams all competed against each other to see who could collect the most diapers to donate. The sophomore won the competition, collecting 2,944 diapers and earning 50 points for their class towards an end-of-year grand prize; upper school classes and middle school advisory teams can earn points throughout the year through community service and other activities.

In total, middle and upper school collected and donated 10,685 diapers to Happy Bottoms. Barstow alum Susan Belger-Angulo ‘76, the organization’s co-executive director and development director, stopped by to collect the donations and thank the students in person.

Happy Bottoms has served the Kansas City metro area since 2009, providing families with diapers. According to the organization, diapers are not covered by food stamps or WIC, meaning families often cut back on groceries, utilities and other expenses in order to afford them. They distributed over 4 million diapers in 2024.

The diaper drive spanned two weeks, from Sept. 22-Oct. 3.
