Flamenco Group Performs for Hispanic Heritage Month

Lower school celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a flamenco performance this week. Hispanic Heritage Month is observed Sept. 15–Oct. 15, to recognize and celebrate Hispanic history and culture.
On Wednesday, Oct. 1, performers from the group 45° Flamenco presented traditional music and dance from Mexico, Cuba and Spain for lower school students in the auditorium. Performers included a dancer in traditional costume, a singer, guitarist and percussionist. Between numbers, they  discussed the cultural, historical and regional significance of each piece of music.

Students in grades 2 and 4 also learned about famous people of Hispanic origin this week, including musicians, authors, athletes and political figures. They showcased their research on individuals such as Lionel Messi, Julia Alvarez and Joan Baez on the hallway bulletin board.
