President and Head of School Art Hall visited third grade classes on Friday, Aug. 22, as the first “mystery reader” of the school year.
Each Friday afternoon, a different “mystery reader” visits the third grade to read aloud and discuss books with students. Faculty and staff are invited to sign up for Friday slots at the beginning of the semester, and are encouraged to bring their own favorite books to share. This activity allows students to meet adults in the building that they may not interact with on a daily basis, and to be introduced to new books. The identity of the mystery reader is always a surprise, but they provide a few clues ahead of time for students to guess who they might be. Mr. Hall revealed that he is a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the LA Dodgers, and that he has two dogs.
Mr. Hall read “Those Shoes” by Maribeth Boelts and Noah Z. Jones, a book about a boy who wants a new and expensive pair of shoes just like his friends at school. The book explores family and friendship dynamics and the difference between wanting something and needing it. Mr. Hall took some time after reading to discuss the book and answer questions.
