Director of Alumni Relations
The Barstow School Advancement & Outreach Department seeks a Director of Alumni Relations whose duties include managing and overseeing the relationship between Barstow and its alumni community. This role involves developing and executing comprehensive engagement strategies to foster a sense of connection, pride, and lifelong involvement among alumni.
This position is a critical member of a high-functioning Advancement Department; key responsibilities include communication and outreach, event planning, cultivating and maintaining relationships, volunteer recruitment and management, archiving and fundraising.
About The Barstow School:
Founded in 1884, The Barstow School is the oldest independent school west of the Mississippi River. Barstow serves students in preschool prep (age 2 ½) through grade 12. For more than 140 years, the School has remained committed to the mission articulated by Mary Barstow: “to promote sound scholarship and to give symmetrical development to mind, body and character.” Today, the School continues to prepare students to achieve their unique potential, live meaningful lives and make a positive impact on the world.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a strategic plan for alumni engagement, ensuring alignment with
- Barstow’s goals and values.
- Create and execute initiatives that enhance alumni involvement, such as reunions, networking
- events, mentorship programs, online presence, and webpage management.
- Establish and maintain effective communication channels with alumni through newsletters, social media, and other platforms.
- Collaborate with the marketing and communication team to highlight alumni achievements and share compelling stories that strengthen the sense of community.
- Organize and oversee various alumni events, including but not limited to reunions, social events, and other gatherings targeting specific groups.
- Recruit, lead, and manage the Alumni Board and volunteers, leveraging their skills and expertise to enhance engagement efforts.
- Work closely with the advancement team to integrate alumni relations into overall fundraising strategies, fostering a culture of philanthropy among alumni.
- Responsible for researching, documenting, and preserving the rich history and achievements of the school.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Ideally, an alum of The Barstow School
- Possess a bachelor's degree and some development experience or a minimum of eight years of experience in non-profit leadership
- A fast learner, self-starter, and detail-oriented, with good problem-solving skills
- Excellent and extensive expertise in written and verbal communication
- Ability to build relationships and work successfully with many different alumni
- Social media skills
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends and travel as needed
Physical Demands:
- Ability to sit and stand for extended periods
- Ability to see and read a computer, as well as enter data
- Physical ability to lift, carry and/or hold up to 30 pounds
Schedule:
This is a full-time, year-round and in-person position with holidays and paid time off in accordance with the Barstow employee benefit plan.
