IDEA Space KC - Summer Interns

The Barstow School is seeking Summer Interns at the Dan & Cassidy Towriss IDEA Space KC to assist in teaching and program development June 13-July 29.  Interns will work each week to help teachers and students from across the Kansas City area grow their comfort and confidence in STEAM-related fields.  Hours of work for IDEA Space summer interns will be Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Housing is not provided with this internship.

The following internship positions are available:
Fabrication Workshop Assistant — Assist Design and Fabrication Facilitator with woodworking and metal shop projects and classes. Assist students and teachers working in the shop space.  
Teaching Assistant — work directly with students and course instructors in week-long STEAM courses.  Help students grow in their comfort and confidence with STEAM learning throughout the course.
Digital Fabrication Assistant — Assist Makerspace Facilitator with digital fabrication projects and classes, including 3D printing and laser cutting. Assist students and teachers working with the digital fabrication equipment. 
Technology Assistant — Assist Technology Facilitator with technology projects and classes, including coding, virtual reality, robotics, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity.  Assist students and teachers working in the Technology Lab
Esports assistant coach — Assist Technology Facilitator and lead esports coach with middle school and high school level esports teams in League of Legends, Fortnite, Rocket League and Knockout City.
The ideal intern to join the inaugural team at IDEA Space KC will possess: 
  • Creativity, enthusiasm and a growth mindset.
  • High school diploma.
  • At least one year of experience as a camp counselor or teaching assistant with K-12 students.
  • Seeking an associate’s or undergraduate degree in education, engineering, advanced manufacturing, construction, woodworking, metalworking, digital design, architecture,entrepreneurship or a related field.
  • Experience with and enthusiasm for STEAM learning. 
  • Respect and appreciation for the needs and potential of diverse learners from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Student-centered educational philosophy.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with K-12 learners.
