Mathematics
The mathematics program builds upon problem solving, critical thinking, computational skills and the knowledge of the number system gained from preschool to grade 8. The program is designed to encourage students to value mathematics and gain confidence in their mathematical ability. Required courses in Algebra and Geometry provide the foundation for further mathematics study at Barstow. Students must satisfactorily complete four years of mathematics courses in the Upper School. Instruction combines and balances the theory and practice of mathematics. A graphing calculator is required for all courses beyond Geometry. Class instruction will be given on the TI-84/TI-84 Plus graphing calculators. Entrance to Honors and AP courses requires a B or above from the previous Honors or AP course and a teacher recommendation. Placement into an Honors or AP course from a regular course will require an A or above, teacher recommendation, and/or a placement test. When needed, the mathematics department will administer placement tests to determine appropriate courses for students.
