A Community Where Every Student is Known, Engaged and Challenged

Joe Fox '04, Director of Upper School
Welcome to Barstow's Middle & Upper school. I'm always delighted to share with prospective families what makes a Barstow education the very best in the region. From the first day of sixth grade to the day your student receives a diploma, we create a seamless progression of learning that challenges, engages and prepares our graduates for success.
I have fond memories of my time as a Barstow student, teacher and college counselor. Now as Director of Upper School, I am often asked what makes Barstow special. I always give the same answer: the outstanding faculty and community. Our faculty is an impressive group with dozens of advanced degrees and combined centuries of experience. Teachers work tirelessly to challenge, support and connect with each student. When your student is known and valued, they have the self-confidence to take intellectual risks, and that is when memorable and lasting learning happens.

Community is more challenging to define, but it begins with relationships between supportive peers and adults who share an engagement with scholarship and take pride in everyone’s successes. Students receive an experiential education, lead or participate in dozens of extracurricular activities, excel in athletics — and enjoy “Only at Barstow” traditions that connect us for life.
