The Best MLB Players

The MLB awards have been announced.

MLB has announced the winner of its four main awards for the regular season. In this shortened 60 game schedule, the players had to produce great numbers in a very limited amount of time. The four awards handed out over the past week have been the MVP, Cy Young, Rookie of the Year, and Manager of the Year awards for both the American League and the National League.

The headliner was the MVP award. This prestigious recognition is handed out to the most outstanding player in each conference. This year Atlanta Braves’ Freddie Freeman and Chicago White Sox’s Jose Abreu took home the hardware. Both players led their respective teams to the playoffs and stayed atop the league leaders in almost every batting category.

The Cy Young is given out to the season’s most outstanding pitchers. This year, two dominant pitchers almost won the award unanimously in their conferences. Shane Bieber of the Cleveland Indians and Trevor Bauer of the Cincinnati Reds led the American and National league in ERA (earned run average) and kept the entire MLB afraid.

In the American League, Kyle Lewis of the Seattle Mariners was named Rookie of the Year in a unanimous selection. On the other side of the league, the award for a most outstanding rookie was given to Milwaukee Brewers’ Devin Williams. Williams became the first reliever to win the award since 2011 by posting a phenomenal 0.33 ERA.

Both Managers of the Year in the 2020 season coached their teams to the playoffs with some of the lowest payrolls in the entire MLB. Don Mattingly, manager of the Miami Marlins, became just the fifth person ever to win both MVP and Manager of the Year. He helped the Marlins get to their first postseason in 17 years all while having most of the team out for long stretches due to COVID-19. In the American League, the manager of the Tampa Bay Rays, Kevin Cash helped lead the team to their first AL East title since 2010. Along with winning their division, the Rays made their way to the World Series where they ultimately lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

During these trying times, baseball was able to push through and complete a 60 game season and full playoff. The individuals who won an award above exceeded expectations and helped their respective teams to achieve more success.
