Students Win State Essay Contest

Two Barstow students won the DAR American History essay contest at the state level this month, and one is advancing to national competition.
Fifth grader Yara Alchekakie and seventh grader Zahra Khumri have been selected as state level winners. In addition, Zahra’s essay won at South Central Division level and will progress to the national level competition.

The contest, open to students in grades five through eight, was established to encourage young people to think creatively about American history. As state level winners, both students will receive a certificate and a medal.

Yara and Zahra are invited to Wichita to present their essays at the Kansas Society DAR State Conference Liberty Awards Luncheon in April.
