Sixth Grade Tackles "Trash" in New Ways

Sixth grade began an interdisciplinary unit at IDEA Space this week anchored around the novel "Trash." The unit incorporates multiple disciplines in innovative ways.
Students kicked off the unit at IDEA Space Wednesday, where they heard from local expert Rick Caplan, discussing waste and ways to reduce it. Caplan introduced their capstone project, in which they will use problem solving skills to create a product or service that helps reduce waste in the community. Students will work in groups to research and brainstorm waste reduction solutions in the world and in their own community. In addition, they will read “Trash” by Andy Mulligan in English, explore the social impact of waste in Geography, and study recycling in Science.
