Visual Arts

Visual arts education enhances one's ability to fully experience beauty and art, while deepening understanding of culture and history. The Barstow visual arts program nurtures creativity and develops skills vital to a child’s full educational development.

Arts Education at The Barstow School

Lower School
Lower school students in preschool through grade 5 take art class twice a week for 40 minutes. Experienced faculty and visiting artists introduce students to new art forms and techniques.

Children develop vocabulary, motor and hand-eye skills by being active participants in art. It stretches their imaginations, expand their world perspective and builds confidence—while encouraging pupils to describe, analyze, and interpret visual images.

Middle and Upper School
In middle and upper school, two- and three-dimensional art classes are offered as electives to students in grades six through twelve. Students in middle school may choose from classes such as General Art, Painting, Black and White Photography and Ceramics. These classes are offered on a semester basis and students may repeat the course for credit and a more challenging curriculum.

Upper school students take Art Fundamentals as a graduation requirement and as a prerequisite for other art classes. After students complete all course work in a specific media, they may take Advanced Drawing and Painting Honors, Photography Honors or Advanced Ceramics Honors. Each spring, seniors display and sell their works in an art show in Barstow's Embry Gallery.

FEATURED LOWER SCHOOL ARTIST

Lower school artist of the quarter Sydney Georgie, grade 5, shows her work to Mr. Foster on December 13, 2017. Her wintery scene is inspired by Chris Van Allsburg's "Polar Express." Students in Mrs. Kukuk's class learned about perspective and vanishing points to create chalk pastel images of a train moving through the snow. (Photo by Todd Race)
