Universal Basic Income

Universal basic income (UBI) is a type of national Social Security that allows for all citizens or residents of a country to receive an equal amount of money, generally from the government, to help meet their basic life needs. The concept has advocates and critics worldwide, with petitions in Germany in 2008 and Spain in 2015 garnering support, but ultimately falling short. In 2016, Switzerland held the world’s first universal basic income referendum, but it was rejected by a 76.9% majority.
