Model UN is a great way for students to broaden their horizons.

As the world leaders gathered in New York the first week October for the United Nations General Assembly, we decided to take a look at our school’s very own Barstow Model United Nations team. In Model United Nations or MUN, teams go to various universities and schools where conferences are held. Teams pick a country and do research on a specific topic that is given by the host university. They need to write a position paper, essentially acting as their chosen country and representing it. The whole point of the conference is to come up with a solution to the problem. From the words of a fellow member, Ricky says, “There are some problems we don’t have an answer to, but talking to other people helps us gain experience for future problems.”

This year, the Barstow MUN team is looking forward to a great season. We are expecting to go to national conferences and win many national awards. In the last few years, countries such as Rwanda, France, and India were represented. Overall, MUN is a great way to practice problem solving skills, diplomacy, and global citizenship. MUN meets during Thursday breaks during school, and Friday lunches to take time to do mock simulations and discuss things that occur globally. MUN president, Wenhan says, “Model UN acts as an educational experience for students in an increasingly globalized world.”

As our world is becoming more and more interconnected with various countries and people with various backgrounds, it’s important to understand their perspectives.
