JOB SHADOW AT BURNS & MAC SHOWS STUDENTS A FUTURE IN STEM

Today's students will shape the world of tomorrow, so seeing engineers and architects at work is important for Barstow students interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers. Upper school STEAM students had that opportunity during a job shadow day at Burns & McDonnell on Tuesday, Sept. 11.
The Kansas City-based engineering and construction firm employs 5,700 STEM professionals who plan, design, construct and manage facilities all over the world.
Burns & McDonnell says jobs requiring STEM skills are growing at seven times the rate of non-STEM jobs. The company believes that a strong foundation in those disciplines breeds innovation and progress.
 
During their visits, students in Computer Assisted Design (CAD) and Engineering Design and Robotics (EDR) electives observed the work of mechanical, electrical, chemical, architectural and environmental engineers. They also learned about interviews and what it takes to land an internship or job in their designated field. And they left pondering the question posed by Burns & McDonnell: “How will you create amazing?”
