PLANNING COMMISSION GIVES BARSTOW EXPANSION PLAN UNANIMOUS SUPPORT
Kansas City, MO — September 26, 2018 — The Barstow School’s plan for a significant campus expansion across the state line into Kansas moved forward with unanimous support from the Leawood Planning Commission on Tuesday, Sept. 25.
Commission members approved Barstow’s request for a special use permit to repurpose the former Hy-Vee building at 12200 State Line Road into a state-of-the-art 21st century educational space. Plans include expansion of Barstow’s Early Childhood, STEAM and award-winning Robotics programs.
“Congratulations to the Barstow School for coming up with a visionary plan for the repurposing of the site.
In my opinion, it will be a positive for both Barstow and the City of Leawood,” said Planning Commissioner Liz Hoyt.
The Leawood Plaza site offers 62,680 square feet and 170 parking spaces. The purchase will increase the size of Barstow’s campus, currently located at 11511 State Line Road in Kansas City, Missouri, by more than 50 percent. The plan also received support from the Pembroke Court Homeowner’s Association, and has been well received by the Leawood Chamber of Commerce.
“The Leawood Chamber is pleased that The Barstow School, with its long history of delivering educational excellence, has chosen to expand operations to a site here in Leawood,” said Chamber President & CEO Kevin Jeffries ’74. “Last night’s Planning Commission action takes Barstow in Leawood one step closer to becoming reality. We look forward to many years of partnership.”
The Leawood City Council is expected to vote on the expansion next month.
“While the Leawood campus is less than a mile from our current campus, it opens up a world of opportunity,” Barstow President & Head of School Shane Foster said. “The warm welcome from Leawood residents, neighborhood associations and businesses makes us even more excited to join the City of Leawood.”
The expansion will mark the first time since the school’s founding in 1884 that Barstow has a campus in both Kansas and Missouri, though the student population comes from 60 different zip codes on both sides of the state line.
