GLOBAL ED STUDENTS EXPERIENCE THE BEST OF BARSTOW

International students enjoyed a tour of Sprint’s corporate campus, a hands-on fine arts activity and a spirited game of lacrosse—along with a host of other activities—during the final days of their cultural exchange at Barstow.
Students from Colegio La Merced in Cordoba, Argentina, and from German School of Madrid, Spain, said goodbye to host families and new friends on Friday, September 21.

On Wednesday, students toured Sprint’s World Headquarters in Overland Park, Kansas. Besides seeing the inventive redesign of workspaces and learning about the global company’s philosophy of innovation, they had the rare opportunity to sit down with Sprint’s Chief Procurement Officer for a one-on-one conversation about technology, engineering and careers. Mariano Legaz also happens to be from Cordoba and was happy to welcome students from back home.

He told them that he rose to his position in the telecommunications business because he was always willing to work hard and to learn new things in an emerging field.

“I entered telecommunications twenty years ago and I asked a lot of questions. I leveraged my strengths and I wasn’t afraid to be the youngest person in the room where people were making decisions,” Legaz said.

The tour was just one stop on a whirlwind itinerary this week. Visited also shadowed Barstow students and attended classes, including a pottery course in the Cave with Lilli Lackey. For many of them, it was a first experience making coil pots. They demonstrated a traditional tango for Barstow students, joined conversational Spanish classes in lower school and played lacrosse with a middle school physical education class. They wrapped up their stay with a bowling party with host families before they said “adios” to Kansas City.
