STUDENT FILMS SCREENED IN KANSAS CITY, NEW YORK

Audiences around the country will be able to watch the works of two budding Barstow filmmakers this fall. Congratulations to Sage Holmes, freshman, and Amy Pan, sophomore.
SAGE HOLMES, “SOCIAL MEDIA”
Holmes’ documentary, “Social Media,” is an Official Selection for the 2017 All American High School Film Festival. It will be screened at the AMC Empire Theatre in New York City’s Times Square October 6-8.

She created the documentary as part of Kelly Finn’s grade 8 writing class last year.

“We researched how social media effects teens. I interviewed high school students who use social media and others who don't to compare the effect and make it relatable to others,” Holmes said.

“I didn't even think it would win, and the contest took a long time to respond, so when I found out that it was accepted, it took me by surprise.”

“Of course we’re proud of her,” Sarah Homes said. “I think the film opens up a really important discussion about how kids use social media.”

Nearly 2000 student filmmakers from 50 states and 40 countries submitted work to the competition. Holmes will be among the finalists attending the festival this fall.

AMY PAN, “VIETNAM VOICES”
In advance of this fall’s highly anticipated PBS documentary series, “The Vietnam War,” KCPT invited students to capture local stories related to the war. A film by Amy Pan, sophomore, is among those will be screened in Kansas City and featured on the KCPT website.

Pan interviewd 75-year-old Da Hu Vo about his memories of his country and his experiences during the war. Barstow students had an advance screening of Pan's film when it aired on BTVN this week

In addition to having her own film screened for a wide audience, Pan will also get to meet the documentary directors, Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, on Sept. 8.

“I was thrilled when I received the email that my piece was acknowledged. It is truly unbelievable that I get to meet Ken Burns, who I greatly admire as a great documentary director. It is a great honor,” Pan said. “This is my first contest, and I didn't think I would accomplish anything. But (Director of Digital Literacy) Mr. Holmes encouraged me to work my hardest and expand my creativity.”

Congratulations, Sage and Amy!
