Barstow Receives Largest Gift in School History

The Barstow School has received a transformational $7.5 million gift to make campus additions and improvements. It is the largest single gift to the school since our founding in 1884.

The Barstow School Announces Largest Gift in School History
$7.5 Million Donation Will Fund New Athletic Center, Campus Improvements
 
 
Kansas City, MO — Dec. 9, 2021 — The Barstow School, an independent coeducational school for students in preschool-grade 12, announced a transformational $7.5 million dollar gift on Thursday, Dec. 9, 2021. It is the largest single gift to the school since its founding in 1884.
 
The anonymous gift will be used to build a new athletic center on the campus at 11511 State Line Road in Kansas City, Missouri. It will also fund artificial turf on the varsity soccer field, renovation of existing locker rooms and new roofs for campus buildings. The Dan & Cassidy Towriss IDEA Space KC, scheduled to open this summer in Leawood, Kansas, will also receive $1 million.
 
“This transformational gift comes as our school is experiencing rising enrollment and preparing to mark sixty years on State Line Road in May, so it is a fitting time to make improvements that will lead us into the future,” said President Shane Foster. “We believe it will spark exponential impact for our students today and for generations to come. There is no better time to invest in education and in our school.” 
 
“We are grateful for a gift that has the capacity to create a groundswell of support throughout our community, allowing us improve the campus and strengthen the innovative programs and rigorous academics that define a Barstow education,” said Board of Trustees Chairman Joel Brous ’88. Barstow serves more than 750 students from 70 zip codes in Kansas and Missouri.
 
“Gifts such as these are only possibly because of the trust, respect and admiration people have for the lengthy body of work that Barstow’s leadership and advancement team have produced,” Trustee Michael Kulp said. Planning for the improvements and consultation with engineers and architects is underway.
