Koenigsegg Gemera: the First Hyper Sedan

As the first of its kind, Koenigsegg explores the concept of a sedan with the performance of a hypercar.

First unveiled at the Geneva Motor show in 2020, the Gemera is a limited production four-seater plug-in hybrid. With only 300 units being made worldwide, and with the performance of a hypercar. Hypercars are the highest performance cars worldwide making up only 1% of cars on the market.

The name Gemera means “to give more,” which is fitting since the design of the car itself is Koenigsegg’s first four-seater. The car’s unique design makes it pleasing to the public. Rather than adopt a traditional sedan configuration, Koenigsegg opted to extend the wheelbase and slope the roofline to preserve the car’s aerodynamics. Although the Gemera “seats four large adults comfortably with space catering to their carry-on luggage” the traditional two-door coupe design was kept, along with Koenigsegg’s iconic dihedral synchro-helix door design.

Despite being a four-seater, the Gemera puts up some impressive numbers through the use of new hybrid technology. The car has 1,727 horsepower and an incredible 2,581 lb-ft of torque. Koenigsegg says that the Gemera can sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 1.9 seconds and achieve speeds of over 240 mph thanks to a mid-mounted newly developed three-cylinder engine and three batteries. Due to the Gemera’s powerhouse, Koenigsegg now has the fastest accelerating production car in history.

Along with the impressive power the vehicle puts down, it also integrates next-generation technology, including automated doors. For the first time, Koenigsegg is debuting a zero-gravity gauge cluster that is mounted to the steering wheel rather than to a fixed position. The company has also introduced a hovering sensor that freely springs 360 degrees, scanning all angles around the car. All this tech comes at a price. The Gemera itself costs a pretty penny to own at over 1.7 million dollars.

It's a brave new world for the Swedish hypercar manufacturer, who, once again, is innovating where others stick to tried and trusted. “Ultimate performance has belonged to the world of two-seaters with very limited luggage space – until now.” This statement from Koenigsegg captures the excitement of this new vehicle and what is to come for future production.
