Barstow Wins Big at Science & Engineering Fair

Among thousands of competitors, Barstow lower school scientists and inventors won five out of 15 categories in a strong showing at the Greater Kansas City Science and Invention Fair.
Students in grades four and five also earned seven special awards, invitations to display projects to larger audiences and even a few cash prizes.

"My kids rocked at the Greater Kansas City Science and Engineering Fair," science teacher Amie Buckner said proudly. Here is the amazing list of accomplishments by all fourth and fifth grade winners:

Fourth Grade Inventions
  • Samantha Reich, Gold and first overall, Inventions.
  • Mei-Mei Payne, Gold and second overall, Inventions, Air & Waste Management Award; invited to display invention at the Linda Hall Library, cash prize for student and Lower School Science Department.
  • Eleanor Nelson, Gold and Science City Maker Award.
  • Daniela Blachly, Gold and Science City Maker Award; invited to display invention at the Linda Hall Library.
  • Phillip Vadaparampil, Gold Award.
  • Vered Alon, Gold Award.
  • Annabelle Buckner, Gold Award.
  • Oliver Kanareck- Gold Award and invited to display his invention at the Linda Hall Library.
  • Jack Richter, Silver Award.
  • Landon Brodd, Silver Award.
  • Leyland Thomas, Silver Award; invited to display her invention at the Linda Hall Library.
  • Sarina Latif, Gold Award.
Fifth Grade Inventions
  • Rose Biria, Gold Award.

  • Apollo Fernandez and Quincy Gilworth, Gold Award, Mary Miller Promising Young Scientist Award, first overall in Engineering; invited to display project at the Linda Hall Library and cash prize.
  • Deuce Chanos, Gold Award, United States Metric Association Award; invited to display his project at the Linda Hall Library.
  • Maaz Hawa, Gold Award, Science City Ad Astra Award, first place overall in Physics and Astronomy.
  • Teagan Kesner, Gold Award, Science City Showcase Award,  invited to display project at Science City, first overall in Material's Science Category.
  • Anya Reddy, Gold Award, first overall in Microbiology.
  • Adit Reddy, Gold Award.
