Service Project Aimed at Stopping Gun Violence

Ethan Kanarek, grade 7, donated "Acts of Kindness" bags to the Kansas City Missouri Police Department as a service project for Grandparents Against Gun Violence (GAGV).
The organization serves Kansas and Missouri with its mission "to reduce gun violence and keep children safe at home, at school and in our community."

Ethan filled one hundred bags with candy to be handed out by police officers at a community event. Each bag is labeled with the phrase, "In a world where you can be anything, be kind." GAGV members also hand out "Act of Kindness" bags to essential workers or when they witness someone doing something kind for another.

"We are delighted to have a young person participate in this project," GAGV President Judy Sherry said. "As grandparents we are working tirelessly to provide an environment safe from gun violence and having a young person like Ethan support our work - we are hopeful he and his peers will understand the importance of prevention and work with us in our efforts."

Despite its name, GAGV is not just for grandparents. Sherry says the group welcomes more student volunteers and parents who are not yet at the grandparent stage. "It will take multi generations to work together to address the epidemic of gun violence," she said.
