Third grade students completed a project-based STEAM and social studies unit with a visit to the Veterans Community Project (VCP) Village on Friday, April 7.
Students headed to IDEA Space to map out their own version of a tiny house based on the houses at the Veterans Community Project. Students were given a tiny house kit and used the exact dimensions at VCP to map out their tiny homes.
While some students physically mapped out the tiny home, others used a paper model to design and decorate their homes. Students also created virtual models of their houses using Minecraft. Students were then joined by the President of National Expansion at VCP, Jason Kander, to learn how the organization is helping support homeless veterans with the Veteran Outreach Center and VCP Village of tiny homes.
After designing the blueprint for a full-sized tiny home at IDEA Space KC, third grade students toured the veterans' community at 89th and Troost to learn how tiny houses can help alleviate homelessness.
Watch third grade students use collaboration, critical thinking and problem-solving skills to construct a tiny house inside IDEA Space.
