The lower school math team placed fifth in Sweepstakes at the State Elementary MCTM Math Contest in Columbia on Saturday, May 4.
The Barstow School had the most mathletes from one school participating at the event. Top finishers were:
Grade 4: Saam Biria, Carter Hayden and Neena Shankar , seventh place.
Grade 5: Carson Lucido, Carlos Salazar, Elliott Clement and Sanjana Akkulugari, third place.
Grade 6: Afraah Hawa and Mahek Vora, sixth place.
In addition to the team results, Sanjana Akkulugari placed fourth in grade 5 Number Sense and Neena Shankar placed 14th as an Overall Individual and qualified for the National Math Competition at Texas A&M in June.
“Barb McAleer and I were driving on I-70 when we began to pass a car with State Mathlete on the rear window, the digits for pi written around the car and their son's name on it,” said math club sponsor Charlotte Keith. “It was one of our own fifth grade families so proud of their mathlete traveling to Columbia to compete,” Congratulations to all!
