 | Get into the Game!
The Barstow school spirit was shining brightly this past week when the Boy’s Varsity basketball players were in the stands cheering wildly for the JV Girl’s basketball game. Senior, Lawrence Brown led the crowd in cheers and several student groups were drawn into the gym to join the spirited crowd. It was a sight to behold and what makes our students and families so very special. The result ...a WIN in double over-time by the JV Girl’s team!
The Barstow spirit is contagious and catching on! Lower School Night at Basketball brought several new energetic faces to the game cheering on our Knights in action. The 40th celebration of Homecoming was one of the best ever, with a huge crowd on hand for all the festivities including the Booster Club Hoops and Soups dinner. We’d like to thank Lori Kallaher and her entourage of BBC volunteers who organized all the evening events. The Barstow dancers and cheerleaders were outstanding, and all three basketball teams, JV Boy’s, Varsity Girl’s, and Varsity Boy’s were victorious! Congratulations to 2012 Homecoming King, Lawrence Brown and Queen, Sabrina Weng -both Barstow Basketball Captains!
The Booster Club is continuing to work behind the scenes in helping to support the spirit at Barstow. We continue to have a wonderful response to our request for concession and gate volunteers- thank you! The monies raised are used by your Booster Club to fund special requests by the Barstow coaches and teams. The purchase of the Shoot-Away Shooting Machine for the basketball program is our most recent example. The BBC is taking on an exciting corporate sponsorship initiative and we encourage you to attend our monthly meetings and learn more about it. See below.
We’ve got spirit...yes we do! Thank you BBC members for all you do to make The Barstow School such a special community.
Sincerely,

Corporate Sponsors GET In the GAME! The Barstow Booster Club is very excited to announce a new corporate sponsorship initiative! Through this initiative we are offering the opportunity for local businesses and companies to become a Barstow Booster Club Corporate Sponsor! One very enticing incentive for becoming a corporate sponsor is the opportunity to advertise to the Barstow and local community! All corporate sponsors will have a customized sign designed with their logo on the fence of either the Barstow baseball or soccer fields from March to November of each year. “This is a win-win for corporate sponsors who are thinking about getting into the game with the Barstow Booster Club,” states Dan Gerson, BBC Co-Vice President. “This allows a sponsor to help us support the funding of our athletic program and student athletes while also getting an opportunity to advertise for their company!” Sign placement is at a premium and will be dependent on the level of sponsorship and first come basis. Additional benefits for becoming a corporate sponsor will be given throughout the school year. If you are, or know of a local business or company interested in becoming a corporate sponsor, please contact Dan Gerson at boosterclub@barstowschool.org.

  | Lower School Night at Basketball Brings Record Crowd and Ball Boy Experiences!
Lower School Night held Friday, January 20, 2012 brought several new energetic faces to the game cheering on our Knights in action. Lower school students were decked out in their spirit wear and many faces painted thanks to the face painting provided by the Knights Starz Dance Team. The students enthusiastically recited cheers taught by our own Barstow cheerleaders during the Lower School Pep Rally! The evening also was host to the first official Barstow Ball Boy/Girl experience! Lower school students Mac Pursell and Grant Harkins were recipients of the experience by winning the raffle give-away at the Bagels with Billy Event held December 9, 2011. The boys were outfitted in official basketball gear and trained to assist the coaches and referees. The boys had the opportunity to personally meet Boy’s Varsity Head Coach Billy Thomas, Assistant to Head Coach Joe Fox, and Barstow’s Athletic Trainer Scott Mendenhall! A special thank you to Vicki Lopatofsky, BBC Lower School Coordinator, for planning the events and building such spirit and enthusiasm in our lower school!

  | National Signing Day Honors Barstow Top Athletes!
The Barstow Booster Club would like to congratulate two of our outstanding Barstow athletes Molly O’Connor and Chase Thorp for signing athletic letters of intent and committing themselves to their respective colleges and universities. Junior, Molly O’ Conner, has committed to playing softball at Kenyon College of the North Coast Athletic Conference, an NCAA Division III program. Senior, Chase Thorp, has signed a letter of intent to play golf for Drury University in Springfield, Missouri. Chase Thorp is one of a select group of elite athletes, only 1% in the country that will receive a scholarship to play at the college level. Booster Club wishes Molly and Chase the best of luck in their future endeavors!

| | Knight Starz Dance Team Coach: Mackenzi Schurz
The Knight Starz Dance Team is thrilled to have Mackenzi Schurz back for her eighth year as their coach. Mackenzi’s passion for dance is contagious, and her enthusiasm is consistent throughout the nine month season, including those early morning practices.
Working full time in marketing, raising a 2 year old, and coaching the Knight Starz, would be an overwhelming task for anyone, but, with support from her husband she makes it look easy. Early morning practices, home basketball games, weekend competitions, and the annual Spring Show are pulled off without a hitch.
Mackenzi’s experience as a competitive dancer includes; being an officer on the Olathe South High School Golden Girl’s Drill Team, a member of the special performance group, “Swingsters”, at Kilgore College in Texas, and a member of the Orange Pride Pom Squad at Sam Houston State University.
Mackenzi’s requirements and expectations from the girls create an atmosphere where the girls are constantly striving for perfection. There is no doubt this group of girls has tremendous respect for Mackenzi. It is a very cohesive group and Mackenzi plays a big role in that.
The team has been successful the past years and consistently places in the top 3 of their divisions at the competitions. In 2010, the Starz placed second at State. The Knight Starz are headed to the 2011-2012 State Competition on February 25th at Lee‘s Summit West High School. The Barstow School is fortunate to have such a talented and dedicated coach.
